Species of the Month May 2020

Rosy Woodlouse Androniscus dentiger

This colourful woodlouse species can be found in semi-natural habitats including many gardens, where it favours damp locations such as under rocks and logs. It is often overlooked due to its small size (5mm), but the bright pinkish colouring makes it fairly unmistakable. It has a yellow stripe along the midline, black eyes and a coarsely bumped texture.

It is widespread throughout Wales, but we only have 102 records in the SEWBReC database (view the Wales wide distribution on Aderyn).

You can find more information and photos of the species from NatureSpot, Eakring Birds and British Myriapod and Isopod Group [BMIG].

If you spot Rosy Woodlouse during May (or at any other time of year), please send us the record, ideally via SEWBReCORD or the LERC Wales App. Instructions on how to submit records are available here.
