Species of the Month: April 2016
Wild Garlic: Allium ursinum
Also known as Ramsons, this early spring flower fills Welsh woodlands with the scent of garlic during April and March. The scent alone is enough to identify this plant, but the clusters of star shaped white flowers and narrow green leaves are also distinctive. There are around 1,400 records of Wild Garlic in the SEWBReC database, but this evocative sign of spring is certain to be present in many more locations in south east Wales.
More information on Wild Garlic is available from the Wildlife Trusts and NatureSpot.
This map on Aderyn shows the distribution of Wild Garlic at a 10km square level for the whole of Wales. Zoom in or click on a 10km square to see the 1km square record distribution.
If you spot Wild Garlic during April (or see the species at any other time of year), please send us the record, ideally via SEWBReCORD or the LERC Wales App. Instructions on how to submit records are available here.
