Gorse Weevil (Exapion ulicis)

 

Despite its diminutive size (2-3mm), the Gorse Weevil is relatively straight forward to identify. It can be found on Gorse throughout Wales, and has grey scales, a long rostrum ("nose") and brown legs. The small size makes it hard to spot, but the species can easily be found by beating.

To find the species, place a white surface such as a beating tray, umbrella or sheet underneath a gorse branch, and lightly beat the bush at least 2 or 3 times. Check through the resulting litter for these very small weevils. If you are lucky you may also find some other interesting species such as Gorse Shieldbug.
