Species of the Month: March 2018
Brimstone Butterfly: Gonepteryx rhamni
A welcome harbinger of spring, this bright yellow butterfly is one of the earliest to appear from hibernation. In fact only the males are bright yellow, with the females being a more demure cream colour. They can be spotted on the wing from early March (sometimes even earlier).
This species can be found throughout the SEWBReC area; you can view the Welsh distribution of Brimstone on Aderyn.
More information about the Brimstone can be found on the Butterfly Conservation website.
If you spot Brimstones during March (or at any other time of year), please send us the record, ideally via SEWBReCORD or the LERC Wales App. Instructions on how to submit records are available here.
